Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) Director

About the Role:

The QHSE Director plans, develops, implements, and maintains integrated Quality, Health and Safety programs to achieve continuous improvement in quality and safety performance. She/He influences the culture, management, and leadership of quality and safety issues by building and maintaining programs to proactively comply with regulatory and corporate level quality, safety & health requirements. This role provides guidance into detailed facility build-out and will work with site teams and external subject matter experts to outline the oversight necessary for a successful site safety plan and execution.

Key Responsibilities:

Health and Safety

• Develops, improves, implements, and manages corporate and site health and safety policies, procedures, PPE requirements, standardization and their supporting programs.

• Responsible for setting up QHSE scorecard and leading indicators.  Establishes, measures and communicates Health, Safety and Quality metrics (KPIs), monitors performance against KPIs, identifies trends and opportunities for improvements.

• Conducts safety training sessions.

• Creates initiatives to close audit findings (including BBSO), as well as reduce and prevent accidents on site.

• Oversees workplace inspections and audits.

• Monitors and analyzes accident/incident data to identify trends and implement corrective measures.

• Ensures compliance with relevant safety regulations and standards. Maintains the safety and security of the business and its employees.

• Communicates frequently with site management teams on mutually beneficial solutions to complex health and safety challenges, successes, areas of opportunities, and upcoming priorities.

• Develops Behavior Based Safety Program for implementation at corporate and site levels.

• Ensures site OSHA efforts are maintained and continually improving.

• Drives Goal ZERO site activities.

• Strengthens organizational safety culture through employee engagement, ownership, accountability and behavior-based safety efforts, support process improvement initiatives.

• Leads, participates in and supports incident investigations as necessary.

• Supports turnaround planning and execution to include occasional assignment as a health & safety rep during turnaround execution.

• Provides input and supports costs and monthly forecasting.

• Maintains and promotes good relations with local, state, federal regulatory agencies, as needed.

Quality

• Develops a strong Quality Management System with a heavy focus on Quality Assurance and an effective Corrective Action System to drive for root causes, permanent corrective actions, best practices and lessons learned.  Develop Statistical Process Control to drive quality improvements.

• Implements a robust Quality Control system - Inspect final output to ensure compliance with requirements.

• Understands customer needs to develop and implement quality control processes, programs and standards to ensure our products meet all necessary requirements before they reach the customer.

• Owns and updates laboratory-related documents e.g., standard operating procedures (SOP), risk assessments, work instructions, laboratory records, etc., according to global Environmental Health Safety and Quality (EHSQ) guidelines, other prevailing regulations, and industry standards.

• Performs laboratory maintenance, calibration, audit, and certification/accreditation.

• Identifies, implements, and executes inspection, testing, and evaluation methods to ensure incoming materials, products, and production equipment adhere to quality standards.

• Lead quality projects such as the facility certification (ISO9001).

• Work with the operations team on safety of the facilities.

• Develops quality control standard operating procedures.

• Provides technical support to operations and sales team.

• Oversees production procedures to identify any deviations from quality standards

• Maintains documentation and perform statistical analysis

• Solicits feedback from customers to assess whether their requirements have been met.

• Identifies opportunities for improvement and develop new procedures as necessary

• Oversees day-to-day laboratory operations and ensures smooth operation by managing employees globally, developing standardized best practices and KPI’s to drive productivity and accuracy, while maintaining documentation and security protocols.

• Drives ISO readiness and certification process across the company without major non-conformances.

Required and Preferred Experience and Skills

• Degree in Health & Safety, Engineering or related technical discipline, or equivalent years of experience.

• Certified Safety Professional Certificate(s) from Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

• Certification in Quality Control is advantageous (e.g. ISO 9000 etc.)

• At least 5 years of experience supervising health & safety and/or environmental professionals.

• 5+ years of experience in a high-risk/metal powder manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.

• Proven experience as a Quality Manager.

• Prior H&S program development and management experience.

• Equipment working knowledge in ICP, XRF, Camsizer, ONH, Flow, Density, SEM, CS testing,  preparations of Certificates of Analysis (CoA’s) while ensuring customer requirements and specs are met.

• In-depth understanding of quality control procedures.

• Experience in Management System development and implementation.

• Proficient in Microsoft applications: PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc.

Physical Requirements of the role

• The position is based in an office environment. It will also require accessing the manufacturing facility regularly, which will include loud noises, moving mechanical parts and exposure to metal powders.

• Strict adherence to safety protocols is required to minimize risks associated with handling hazardous materials.

• The role requires wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in the manufacturing facility, including steel-toe shoes, protective eyewear, earplugs and respiratory equipment (when working with metal powders).

• No significant physical requirements.
